Anthropogenic Biomes of the World
Wildlands
Wildlands, lands without evidence of human occupation or
land use, currently occupy about 20% of Earth's ice-free
land. Wildlands are not truly anthromes,
as they represent the remaining wild biome area of our
planet. Three wildlands anthromes were identified
based on their relative cover by trees and bare
soil. In general, these anthromes are either
non-productive because of unfavorable climates, or are
forests that have not been cut in historic times.
