GROUP: tall graminoids (tg)
DEFINITION:non-hydromorphic graminoids >1 m in height growing in dense thickets with
>>90% Canopy Cover by the graminoids during the growing season (Tree cover
<<10%). Many species, including Miscanthus sp., Phyllostachys
sp…. USE = Fallow (not managed for production or Ornamental
USE), Forestry (planted or managed for harvest),
Ornamental (in a managed park or garden not used for bamboo production).
Minimum feature scale is width >30 m AND area >1000 m2. NOTE:
IF >50% of area of tall graminoid patch is within potential Disturbed
area, THEN classify as GROUP = disturbed & debris (this exception
is necessary because the growth pattern of tall graminoids, especially bamboo,
involves long-term spreading Regrowth across large areas, often covering
highly disturbed areas and structures. This makes it difficult to tell which
areas are Planted vs. Regrowth, which areas are harvested, and
which are not, and because vegetation regrowth can persist for centuries).

Return
|
- Object
- non-woody tall graminoid >1m height (reed or cane) = non-woody tall graminoid: NOT any kind of bamboo or a hydromorphic tall grass. Example is Miscanthus sp.,
- scrubby bamboo <3m height =
- medium bamboo >3m height, <3cm girth = small girth tall bamboos, such as
Phyllostachys nigra.
- tall bamboo, > 3cm girth = giant bamboos, such as
Phyllostachys edulis.

Return
|
- non-woody tall graminoid >1m height (reed or cane) = tg01
- scrubby bamboo <2m height = tg02
- medium bamboo >2m height, <3cm girth = tg03
- tall bamboo, > 3cm girth = tg04
|
Dominance Rules
|
Return
|
-
IF TYPE with greater vegetation cover area is very similar or otherwise unclear:
- Choose non-woody tall graminoid >1m height (reed or cane) over scrubby bamboo <2m height over medium bamboo >2m height, <3cm girth over tall bamboo, > 3cm girth.
- IF unclear whether tall graminoids cover <<90% of feature, then choose alternative vegetation cover class, considering tall graminoid cover as equivalent to woody vegetation.
-
tg01 may appear to overlap with hv01.
- IF FORM = FP or AN, either tg01 or hv01 may be chosen, as identified in the field based on the degree to which vegetation species are hydromorphic (hv01).
- IF the FORM of the feature is any TR FORM: choose hv01.
- IF the FORM is any TE FORM, choose tg01.
